Music4Health’s Piano Express program provides piano lessons and practice sessions for children in 2nd-6th grade in their own schools.
Lessons are structured to teach skills, and theory for the main purpose of self-expression and positive coping. Students will study piano pieces for their expressive qualities, and learn theory to provide improvisational experiences using their preferred music or to express the day’s mood. They will also be guided to write their own original songs and pieces. Students will have regular opportunities to share their accomplishments with their peers. The emphasis will be on social connections rather than having a perfect performance.
This program aims to create a connection between piano skills and mental health coping skills. Electronic keyboards will be provided at the school which are available for practice time with adult support. It is not required that the students have a piano at home to participate in this program.
Secure Virtual Platform options are available during COVID-19 mandated restrictions.
Music4Health classes are provided using a trauma-informed approach.
